my baby

my baby is one year old and he is something else.

he wakes up smiling,
and cries only when it's time to get out of the bath or when he is out of food.
did i mention that he loves to eat?
especially cake.
 chocolate, vanilla, he doesn't discriminate.
and just as we knew he would, he covered himself in icing from his first birthday cake.
if we hadn't taken it away, he would've eaten the entire cake.
he is adorable beyond words, and i swear i am not just saying that because he belongs to me.
just ask anyone.  preferably my mom.
if he were a piece of cake, i would eat him up with the same fervor.
my baby is just that sweet.

i'll be the judge of that

pinterest is 3 parts: awesome to 1 part: liar.

like when they tell you that this recipe will make your chicken look like this.

Source: food.com via Cortney on Pinterest

lies, lies, lies.

or when they convince you that homemade fruit bites will be a healthy, delicious and wholesome snack for your family.

as it turns out, burnt strawberries taste like shit.

so needless to say, i was a little skeptical of the name of this margarita recipe. but since it is cinco de mayo, i decided to take one for the team (wink, wink) and make a batch of these at home.

a little too sweet for our liking, but a salted rim will fix that problem right up. go ahead, make yourself a batch and tell me what you think. but for the love of god, do not make the fruit snacks.

 happy cinco de mayo, y'all!

RIP

my uncle is just seven years older than me.  he has been more like a brother than an uncle to me my entire life.  i have vivid memories of going to visit my grandparents on a friday or saturday night.  as it neared my bedtime, my teenaged uncle was getting showered and ready for a big night out.  and as he got ready, he almost always listened to the beastie boys.  loudly.

at around seven or eight years old, i begged him to make me a tape of the song 'girls' because i loved it so.  my mom quickly vetoed my awesome idea.

fast forward a few years; my uncle came home from college for a weekend having just bought the cd, check your head.  he hated it, so he gave it to me.

i loved it.

the beastie boys transport me through memories like a rolodex; one song can remind me of being an eight year old, begging for my uncle's attention.  another can remind me of a certain party in high school, or a certain boy, or friend, or a period of time in college.

i am so, so sad to hear of MCA's passing.  may he rest in peace.

long live the beastie boys.

greatest hits

i have named this week's greatest hits, baby week.  i have had the pleasure of meeting two very precious young men, one 8 weeks old and the other 2 days old.  there is nothing better than sniffing a baby (unless the baby is wearing a full diaper like the ungodly one i just took off of my precious boy.  omg.)
here are the things that have made my week memorable:

1) finn is here.  and isn't he perfect?

2) mornings with these boys.
3) my rose-of-sharon exploded.
 4) ben's school carnival.  i love a carnival committee that rewards me for volunteering my time with a couple of cold beers.  just one of the billion reasons i love the children's center.

 5) i finally got to meet craig craig luke ryan.  it took everything in me to keep from nibbling on him (i have a problem with wanting to just eat. babies. up.), so i settled on repeatedly kissing that sweet head.
 6) this precious almost-one-year-old, ear-infected baby.  sometimes i look at him and wonder if he was switched at birth.  is this happy green-eyed, tow-headed baby boy really mine?

looking forward to my five mile race
(hello?  cortney, is that you???)
AND
my baby's first birthday.
actually both of those things make me want to cry.  hmph.

how was your week?  what are you looking forward to?

until next time,
xoxoxo

ever heard the saying, "wrangler butts drive me nuts"?
well, i prefer my cowboys partially dressed.
around these parts, we call this look 'the naked cowboy'.
what can i say, they are fashion forward.

this and that

1) the art of sebastien millon is cute and a little off-beat.  right up my alley.

learn more here.

2) i believe i have posted about the photographer Hideaki Hamada and his two sweet sons before.  since then he has published more photos of his beautiful boys.  the photos capture brotherhood perfectly, which is still such a mystery to me yet so familiar at the same time.
see more here.

3) isn't this poster beautiful?

find it here.

4) kelly (from one of my favorite blogs, design crush) started a project called 'little corners'.  it celebrates the little parts of your home that make your heart go pitter-patter.  she encourages you to share your own little corners.  why didn't i think of that?

5) nathan ripperger makes posters about things that he says to his kids.  i swear, he took these words right out of my mouth.
see more here.

6) these philosophy posters by max temkin are my favorite.
